According to a Reuters dispatch carried in the 13 April 2000 issue of the Beirut newspaper "as-Safir", the talks centered on recent political developments in the region and bilateral relations between the PFLP and Syria. Mahir al-Tahir, a member of the Political Bureau of the Popular Front and official spokesman for the PFLP, said that the meeting reaffirmed the right of all the Palestinian refugees to return to their homes. The PFLP is currently working to form committees wherever Palestinians reside to defend the right of return in accordance with UN Resolution 194.Al-Tahir, who attended the meeting, noted that the Syrian Defense Minister renewed Damascus's support for the just struggle of the Palestinian people for self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with its capital in Jerusalem. He said that Habash affirmed at the meeting that the PFLP and the entire Arab nation support Syria as it stands by its demand for a total Israeli withdrawal from all the occupied Arab territories as the basis for attaining a just and comprehensive peace in the region.
